Apples – This easy fruit has great fiber and is very refreshing when traveling. I call apples natures toothbrush, with my teeth always feeling cleaner after I’ve eaten my apple. Apples will stay fresh for over a week, minus any bruising. The fiber will balance your blood sugar levels, cleanse your digestive tract and has few calories.
Raw Nuts – Having a variety of raw nuts on hand will give you a powerful punch of minerals, vitamins and good quality fat and protein ratios. I also like to add Goji Berries with my raw nuts, which is considered a superfood. Goji berries offer protection from cancer, increasing longevity, boosting the immune system and lowering cholesterol. Since all dried fruit has higher amounts of sugar, I always consume with a fat and protein, such as raw nuts to slow the glucose load. Other foods to add to your raw nut mix are cocoa nibs, shredded coconut and any seasonings to add flavor to your mix. My favorite is nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor.
Hemp Seeds – can be purchased in sealed foiled bags for easy transport. They have been used for over 2000 years as a healing and tonifiying food in treating a number of ailments. Hemp is protein rich, gluten free with great omega fatty acids and fiber.
Chia Seeds – More and more people are becoming aware of Chia Seeds and the healthy properties they hold. They contain great omega 3 fatty acids, hunger satisfying protein and lots of antioxidants. Mix 2 tbsps of chia seeds per 16 oz of water and you’ve got a hydrating power pack snack.
Carrots or Pea pods – the art of chewing is sometimes great to pass the time while traveling. So if you must chew, chew on fibrous veggies that will provide nutrients. This crunchy snack doesn’t need refrigeration for an entire day and is rich in vitamin A and K and other antioxidants.
