What is The Internet? It is the global system of interconnected computer networks that use the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of private, public, academic, office, business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries a vast range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents and applications of the World Wide Web (WWW), electronic mail, telephony, and file sharing, printer sharing etc.

The Internet was a network of computers used by the US Department of Defense in 1969, through the ARPA project that developed a network called the ARPANET (Advanced Project Project Agency Network), where they demonstrated how with UNIX-based hardware and computer software.

The initial purpose of building the project for military purposes. At that time the US Department of Defense created a scattered computer network system by connecting computers in areas of great importance to addressing centralized problems, which could cause damage.

The ARPANET initially linked only 4 sites – the Stanford Research Institute, the University of California, Santa Barbara, the University of Utah, where they were united in 1969, and in general the ARPANET reserve in October 1972. It has been … growing rapidly across regions, and all universities in those countries want to join, when making ARPANET difficult to organize.

Therefore the ARPANET is split into two, namely “MILNET” for military purposes and the new “ARPANET” smaller for non-military purposes, universities. Combined both networks eventually known as DARPA Internet, which then simplified into the Internet.
